What do you think is a special gift for your mother’s birthday? Is it an expensive watch? Or is it a beautiful necklace? Let’s find out from Anna’s story!
***
Anna lived with her parents in a town called Norafield. It was a beautiful and peaceful town with friendly neighbors. If you looked from a distance, you could see the vibrant red roof of Anna’s small one-story house. It had a creamy white exterior encircled by a white picket fence. Some lovely flower pots adorned the fence.
Anna’s mother, Mrs. White, loved flowers a lot. But, they needed more space to afford a garden. Anna’s father felt sorry about it, so he came up with an idea to plant some flowers in a few pots for Mrs. White. Anna and her mother cared for them daily and had many small talks.
“Mom, what was your favorite flower?” Anna asked her mom while they were watering the flower pots.
“Hm, that must be the queen of flowers, Anna!” answered Mrs. White.
“You mean roses?” Anna looked at her mom with big brown eyes.
Anna was a cute young girl with curly chestnut hair. She was so energetic. She often disappeared for a long time, making her parents worried sometimes. She loved running around the town, counting the exciting things, such as the number of houses or dogs. She also enjoyed admiring beautiful gardens in certain places. Perhaps Anna inherited this passion from her mother.
“That’s right, my dear!” Anna’s mother warmly smiled at her. Her eyes were brown, just like Anna’s.
Anna’s mother was a wonderful woman. She had the most soothing voice. She dedicated her life to her daughter’s happiness and well-being. She made the best meals that were filled with comforting flavors. She took care of Anna carefully. She helped Anna with homework. She always put Anna’s needs above her own. She was not only a mother but also a friend to Anna. She understood Anna more than anyone else could.
As Anna grew older, she understood the depth of her mother’s love beyond words and actions. Anna always wanted to do something to make her happy, but sometimes, she upset her. Anna felt very sorry about it. At least once, Anna wanted to do something nice for her mother.
There were only three days left until her mother’s birthday. Anna was determined to make her mother’s birthday special. She thought long and hard about what she could do. Finally, she came up with a gift that her mother loved the most.
**
The next day, Anna passed by a charming house while walking through the town. The large house had a spacious garden like a magical kingdom of flowers. It was bursting with vibrant colors and delightful aromas. Anna had never seen a beautiful garden like that before. She stopped and admired it.
What made the garden extra special was the variety of roses it had. There were red velvet, soft pink, and pure white roses. These flowers sparkled in the sun and made the air smell really nice.
The garden belonged to an elderly woman named Mrs. Whites, who lived alone. Despite her wealth, Mrs. Whites was down-to-earth and approachable. She had a deep connection to her neighbors and was known for her generosity. She often opened her garden to the neighbors and welcomed them to enjoy the beauty of her flowers.
Anna quickly got inside because Mrs. Whites’ house gate was open. She wanted to admire the flowers closely. When Anna gently touched the silky petals of a red rose, she remembered her mother’s fondness for roses. She thought her mother would love to have one. Anna reached out to the flowers. She was about to pluck one of the roses.
“Anna, my dear,” Mrs. Whites said gently, “I couldn’t help but notice you admiring my flowers. Is there something I can help you with?”
Anna was startled. It was Mrs. Whites’ voice.
Mrs. Whites looked at her kindly. Her eyes were a gentle blue, like the calm sky. She wore a pastel pink floral dress, and her smile was so friendly that it made her seem like a fairy.
Anna blushed, embarrassed and guilty for considering stealing the flowers.
Anna answered to Mrs. Whites, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Whites. I wanted to give my mom some pretty flowers for her birthday, but I don’t have money to buy them.”
Mrs. Whites walked toward Anna and patted Anna on the shoulder. “I understand, dear. Instead of stealing the flowers, how about I give you a chance to earn them? I need your help, and in return, I’ll give you some flowers as a thank-you gift.”
Anna’s eyes lit up with gratitude. “That sounds wonderful, Mrs. Whites! I’d be happy to help.”
“Wait for me,” Mrs. Whites said kindly.
She disappeared for a moment, and then she returned with a watering can. She handed it to Anna and said, “You take care of the pretty flowers, and I’ll handle everything else.”
With a flick of the wrist, Mrs. Whites switched on the water hose and began watering the tall trees, the green plants, and the bulb flowers in the garden. Anna took her job seriously and spent the morning carefully watering the blooming flowers. It was teamwork between Anna and Mrs. Whites.
At noon, Mrs. Whites decided she would bake some cookies with Anna.
They gathered flour, sugar, eggs, and chocolate chips and put them on Mrs. Whites’ kitchen counter. Mrs. Whites explained each step patiently, making sure Anna understood everything.
Anna was excited as she poured the flour into the mixing bowl. She carefully cracked the eggs, trying not to get any shells in the batter. Mrs. Whites showed her how to mix everything until it became a perfect dough. Anna couldn’t help but taste a bit of the dough—it was sweet and delicious!
They used cookie cutters to make fun shapes out of the dough, like stars and hearts. While the cookies were baked in the oven, the kitchen filled with a great smell. Anna watched through the oven door, waiting for the cookies to turn golden brown.
When the cookies were ready, they took them out of the oven and placed them on a cooling rack. Anna’s eyes sparkled with delight as she admired the golden, perfectly baked cookies. They looked and smelled amazing! Anna couldn’t resist any longer and eagerly picked up one of them. She felt the cookie’s softness as she took that first delicious bite. The chocolate chips melted in her mouth, creating a sweet and rich taste.
But these cookies were not just for them. Mrs. Whites had a kind-hearted plan. She put some of the freshly baked cookies in a basket.

She said, “Anna, how about we share these delicious cookies with some of the people? Today was my birthday. I am happy to share my happiness that day with others.”
“Happy birthday, Mrs. Whites! You and my mother have the same birthday!” Anna yelled excitedly.
“Thank you, Anna!” Mrs. Whites smiled. “Hurry up before it gets dark!”
They carefully placed the cookies in the basket and set off on a mission of kindness. Together, they walked around their town and shared cookies with people.
Mrs. Whites gave cookies to the elderly couple who lived next door. Anna shared the cookies with the kids playing at the park. They gave cookies to the friendly postman on the street. Both Mrs. Whites and Anna got a lot of thanks today. She understood how sharing something could make people so happy, and it warmed her heart.
As the sun began to set, they returned home. Mrs. Whites was proud of Anna for being such a good helper. Anna felt a sense of pride. She was happy that she had made people smile with their cookies.
As she promised, Mrs. Whites led Anna back to the beautiful garden with roses. Mrs. Whites bent down and gently picked the most beautiful roses. She carefully tied them together with a ribbon, making them look even more special.
“These roses are for you, Anna,” Mrs. Whites said, her gentle blue eyes filled with kindness.
“You’ve worked so hard today. You are worth getting these beautiful roses. You also show that you are a kind person. Remember, it’s always better to ask for help and work for what you want, just like you did today.” Mrs. Whites gently smiled.
Anna’s face lit up with joy as she accepted the bouquet of roses. She thanked Mrs. Whites with all her heart. She felt deeply grateful for the amazing day they had spent together.
Anna now knew she had found her mother’s perfect birthday gift. She walked back home with the bouquet in her hands. She couldn’t wait to share the story of her day and the beautiful flowers with her mother. She knew that the love behind the gift would touch her mother.
When Anna arrived home, she found her mother in the cozy kitchen. She was preparing dinner. Mrs. Lilly heard Anna’s footsteps. She turned around and said, “Where did you go, Anna? I’ve been looking for you the whole day!”
Anna hid the bouquet of roses behind her back. “Mom,” Anna said, “I have a gift for you.”
Mrs. Lilly looked at Anna, her eyes filled with warmth. “Oh, darling, you didn’t have to get me anything. Your love is the greatest gift of all.”
Anna stepped forward, revealing the bouquet of roses. “I know, Mom, but I wanted to do something special for your birthday.”
Mrs. White’s eyes widened in surprise, and she broke into a big smile. She walked over to Anna, and they embraced in a heartfelt hug.
“Thank you, Anna. These roses are beautiful,” Mrs. Lilly said emotionally.
Anna felt a warm tear in her mother’s eye. Anna had made her mother happy with the roses and the love behind them. She later shared stories of her day as they stood in the cozy kitchen. Mrs. Lilly listened with a heart full of love and pride for her daughter.
